Dress Protocols to be Followed by the Mother of the Bride

What should you wear to your daughter’s wedding? Is it something in pale beige and cream in an age-appropriate design that guarantees to make you look matronly and portly? No! Those ideas of a mother of the bride are long gone and today, the bride’s mother can dress to look glamorous and gorgeous.

However, sophisticated you might want to look in chic mother of the bride dresses, it’s not a free-for-all for you and there are certain dress codes and protocols that need to be followed.

Given here are a few of them.

Plan early: This is necessary, partly for you and partly because another person is waiting for you to make a choice. But first, you should plan early for the dress, maybe as much as three months before the wedding. Regardless of whether you buy mother of the bride dresses from a specialized wedding boutique or have one tailor-made exclusively, it is necessary to keep adequate time for fittings and alterations. Further, it is traditional that the mother of the groom waits for the bride’s mother to decide and based on that make her choice. Often the two exchange samples of the fabric so that they can wear matching dresses to look a pair in the wedding photographs. It is your responsibility to give her enough time to finalize her dress.

Ask your daughter: Find out from your daughter if there are any special themes decided for the wedding by her and the groom before you order for mother of the bride dresses. Just imagine that you have ordered a formal church-type flowing beaded gown and the pair has decided on an informal beach wedding. It is a sure recipe for disaster. Additionally, you will look fully out of place in the wedding photographs too.

The venue and the weather: These two are critical factors in selecting a dress. Wear formal gowns to a church wedding and pantsuits for an outdoor informal bash. Similarly, a strapless gown would be fine for a summer wedding but not for a winter event. In that case. you have to wear a jacket over the dress or drape a shawl around your shoulders.

Keep these factors in mind while finalizing mother of the bride dresses for your daughter’s wedding
