The Evolution of Women’s Bolero Jacket
Before going into how
women’s bolero jacket evolved over the ages and why it is now a
must-have for any wardrobe, a quick look at what the outfit is about will be in
order.
This outfit, in
various forms, has been around for centuries and is worn by women of all ages.
Hence, the standard size of the jacket is as popular and convenient as the plus-size
ones. A bolero jacket is worn over another dress or an outfit and
typically stops around the waist.
If you go back in
time, you will find that this length was dictated more out of convenience than
fashion. Most ladies in the past, especially of aristocratic lineage, wore
skirts that billowed out from the waist. The greater the flare, the more
glamorous was the look. In fact, ladies often put on a wood frame below the
skirt to accentuate the flare. Thus, the only piece of clothing that could be
worn over the skirt was a jacket over a blouse. This jacket was open at the
front with the sides bought together with strings, and the length was up to the
waist. This was where the evolution of the bolero jacketstarted.
Subsequently, these
boleros evolved into a jacket that could be worn over any other dress. The
front is now not necessarily brought together even though the basic structure
remains somewhat similar to what matadors wore over their gear during
bullfights.
Even though the bolero
jackethad always been hugely popular down the ages, the first half of the
1990s saw bolero jackets on a downswing. However, in the latter part of the
same decade, famous French designer Yves St. Laurent blew life into the bolero
again by showcasing it on the ramps under his label. This old wine in new
bottle apparel caught on like a house on fire and since then there has been no
looking back for the bolero jacket.
This is mainly
because of the flexibility and versatility of the bolero jacket. This is
one outfit that can be worn on informal occasions like fun outings with friends
and family as well as for formal evening dinner dates. In both instances, one
can be equally comfortable in a bolero jacket. This is why women’s
bolero is a must-have for any wardrobe.
